FIBER FACE 2 YOGYA 2009

Terms of Reference (TOR)
Fiber Face 2 Yogya 2009 is the continuation of the Fiber Face Yogya 2007 exhibition that a group of fiber artists held at Babaran Segaragunung Culture House Gallery, July 28 through Agustus 12, 2007. At that time, the exhibition was limited to artists who resided in Yogyakarta. Fiber Face 2 Yogya 2009 plans to reach out to a broader community—not only fiber artists who reside in Yogya—but also those from many regions and countries. The venue for this exhibition is Taman Budaya Yogyakarta.

In retrospect, fiber arts are not new phenomena as fibers are provided by nature with easy accessibility any place and any time. Almost all traditional societies use fibers in their lives for both practical and non-practical purposes In contemporary times, fiber arts have not been restricted to using only natural fibers, but have also expanded to use other materials that allude to or compliment the characteristics of the fibers. Presently fiber arts encompass a wide range of expression: two-dimensional works, three-dimensional works, as well as combinations of the two in installations. Each work requires an adequate space to enhance appreciation from various perspectives.

This exhibition focuses not only on aesthetic effects of fibers, but also on observations of creative processes of development and growth of fiber arts over time, so that the public can also witness the expressive journey from the past through the present, as well as observe the variety of expressions between regions.
It is hoped that this exhibition will create an opportunity for the communication of values and creative processes between the artists themselves and between the artists of one region with another, as well as between generations. In a broader sense, this exhibition represents an opportunity for cross-cultural dialogue.
